Discover Music

  1. You will need several samples of reggae music for this activity (or whatever type of music you choose) and sets of headphones for your students to listen to the music.
  2. Have students listen to the different selections.
  3. As a group, they should brainstorm a list of characteristics that exemplify reggae music. For example:
    • bongo drums
    • acoustic instruments
    • "island sound"
    • upbeat lyrics
  4. Have them come up with a definition for reggae music--the style, sound, and instrumentation. Have books available for students to do research about reggae.
