Graphing Names
Create a simple graph with the numbers 1-12(add more numbers if needed) along the bottom of the graph. This works best if done on a flannel board. Have all of the students' first names ready made on small cards with flannel pieces on the back. The activity is for the students to graph the class' names according to how many letters they have in their names. Have a list of questions for them to answer about the number of letters(ie. What is the most common number of letters/least common? How many have even numbers of letters/odd numbers?). If you do not have a flannel board, you can use push pins instead. You could also make the graph on heavy tagboard and laminate it. The students could use wipe off markers and actually write the names of the students on the graph.
