Center Focus

Sleepy Hollow

  1. During the Halloween season, read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving to your class. Or you can read a shortened version of the classic, such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle : And, Rip Van Winkle (Dover Children's Thrift Classics)
  2. At this center have your students work in groups to dramatize one of their favorite parts of the story. Encourage them to make stage displays and use costumes as necessary.
  3. Give students extra center time to work on their play, so that they can present it to the rest of the class.
  4. You may want to choose certain scenes to be depicted and have groups randomly choose from them in order to not have repeated acts. This way you can make a complete play of the story. You may wish to share it with the school if your students to a good job.
