If the Earth Were Flat

  1. It hasn't always been realized that the Earth is round. Many people used to think that it was flat. In order to help your students understand the realizations that had to be made to come to the conclusion that the Earth is round, have them do some research.
  2. They should list 5 reasons the Earth was decided to be round. For example: ships coming over the horizon, the movement of the stars, the movement of the sun, etc.
  3. Have a globe, world map, and books available at this center for your students to use to come to an understanding of why the Earth has to be round.
  4. Have students consider too how travel by air and sea would change if the earth was flat. You may also ask them to consider how our days would change, and how the solar system in general might function.
