Organize class events (birthdays, holidays, fiestas, field days, etc.) with this calendar idea. In the beginning of the year, have your new students get in groups, one for each month of the year. They will need to create a picture to illustrate their month as well as the actual corresponding calendar, including important dates for your class. This is fun for the kids and it is also a good icebreaker when starting off the new year. Use large chart paper so you can put the calendar up on the bulletin board for everyone to see. Have them make small symbols for each day in their month that will be used to place on the calendar when that day comes. They can punch holes in the top of the symbols and these can hang over push pins placed in each calendar square.
