When your kids are using educational software in the classroom, the sounds that are used in the games are often distracting to other students that are at other centers or completing other work. In order to eliminate this distraction, get some cheap headphones and plug them into the soundcard of the computer. Plug it in where the speakers are normally plugged in and the output will go to the headphones.
