During the Age of Exploration, the Spaniards were attempting to reach Japan and the Spice Islands area. Columbus' idea was to get to Japan by sailing west since the eastern route was apparently blocked. Have your students find the distance from Spain to Japan; they should find the distance going eastward and westward and compare the results.
